“A Letter to America” (double live CD) is one of the best albums I have heard in 20 years or more... it is “Americana” like Mellencamp, Springsteen, Byran Adams, or John Fogherty, but is uniquely the voice and mind of John Parr. Offering the greatest hits and the new works that inspire hope for a better future beyond our own personal struggles in small-town America.
The arrangements range from intimate and extremely personal ballads and rockers delivered solo by Parr and his guitar, to full-blown band arrangements with choral backing vocals. The lyrics are on the level of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, with vocal inflections that are reminiscent of Steve Marriott, Don Henley, Lou Graham, Bryan Adams, The Boss, and more, with facile and clever guitar arrangements, and a band that is on the order of the greats, like Toto. And more impressively, this work was recorded live in concert, all of the greatest hits, and the new diamonds, in one live concert.
I get the message in Letter to America, loud and clear. I indeed have hope for a better future beyond this small town.

I was on the road to nowhere
Just these six strings to my name
On the run from one more one-night stand
Seekin' pleasure in the pain
Shinin' like a diamond in the sand
You made me understand
I hear you saying
Over and over
Chorus:
When you know what you want
You gotta come out fightin'
Just like a ragin' bull
Like a bolt of lightnin'
Like a fire brigade
With the flames ignitin'
Life is rough but it's sure excitin'
You know what you want
You gotta come out fightin'
I built walls to hide my feelin's
Just another good-time boy
Never carin' what I said or done
Breakin' hearts like they were toys
No, never goin' back to where I was
Baby that's because
I hear you sayin'
Over and over
(chorus)
(Like the fire brigade)
Burnin' down down the highway to you
(Like the fire brigade)
You know it's true
You know what you want
You know what you need
You know what you want
You know what you need
You know what you want
You gotta come out fightin'
Just like a ragin' bull
Like a bolt of lightnin'
Like a tidal wave
When the surf is rising
You wipe out but you're back there riding
You know what you want
You gotta come out fightin'
I don't wanna be the reckless one, the man with the gun
I don't wanna be the reckless one
I had it, I lost control, the chance I'd hungered for, out the door
Heard it on the peacetime radio, the ratings were low
I heard it on the peacetime radio
Now it was just the same old song, with all those same old lines
Wasn't mine, wasn't mine, ooh
Chorus:
Somebody stole my thunder, left me to die in the wind and rain
Somebody stole my thunder again
Look at the strain I'm under, devil may care, it's a loser's game
Somebody stole my thunder again
Caught him down in Soho, layin' tracks, the knife in my back
His stealin' days are numbered, that's a fact
I stuck it to him face to face, but he just turned and laughed
Laughed his last, he's the past, ooh
(chorus)
People dancing everywhere, never knowing, never care
Diggin' all that rock 'n roll, they don't care whose song he stole
Somebody stole my thunder, left me to die in the wind and rain
Somebody stole my thunder again
I left him six feet under, the devil may care, it's the price he paid
He'll never steal my thunder again
Somebody stole my thunder, left me to die in the wind and rain
Somebody stole my thunder again
I left him six feet under, left him to die in the fallin' rain
Somebody stole my thunder again... (to fade)
She's got time on her hands
She's got time in her car
She's got time on her locker
And on her VCR
She's running right on time
Not a second too late
Yeah she's her mother's daughter
She taught her time won't wait
She's in the prime of her life
But time ain't enough
'Cus while her clock keeps tickin'
There ain't no time for love
Time keeps tickin', the clock keeps tickin'
Time keeps tickin', the clock keeps tickin'
Time time tickin', the clock keeps tickin'
Time keeps tickin', the clock keeps tickin'
Sometimes I think the world's gone crazy
Sometimes I think we've all gone mad
There's only one way we can change it
We've got to beat the clock
We've got to break this hour glass
By dawns first light
She's on the road again
She's got the candle burning
From both ends
She burns twice as bright
But only half as long
And before she knows it
All her time is gone
Destiny, I can hear freedom call
With these hands
We can tear down these walls
Ya gotta sing out loud
Sing out strong
He's gonna soon be here
And it won't be long
You wanna change the world
You need a man with a vision,
Got it all figured out
You need a man with a vision
And through his eyes
We'll see a better place tonight
The world will know his name
He's a man with a vision
Sixty four, fighting on distant shores
One man alone
Can stop this senseless war
You gotta sing out loud
Gotta sing out strong
He's gonna soon be here
And it won't be long, yeah
(Chorus)
(What the hell are we fighting for)
I saw the future in the eyes of a man
(No-one ever gonna win this war)
He said I have a dream
(Come the day we'll live as one)
It don't matter 'bout the colour of his skin
(When everyman will be free)
When every man can be free
You wanna change the world
You need a man with a vision
Got it all figured out
You need a man with a vision
Across the land
We'll see the fires burning bright
The world will know his name
He's a man with a vision...
Love, so good, so good
And I want you to know
Love, so good, so good
There ain't no lettin' go
Breakin' down your sugar walls
Taste so sweet, resistance falls
So good, so fine, so right
Chorus:
Breakin' down ya door
Beggin' you for more,
Dirty lovin', dirty lovin'
No I don't want it clean
Just low down and mean
Dirty lovin', dirty lovin'
You been around, know the score
Never met no one like me before
Girl, take my hand
Lead me to the promised land
Hot, burnin' down, only you
Can turn this thing around
So good, so fine, so right
(chorus)
You're so dirty mama
I know what you want
Baby what your body needs
You don't need no doctor
Dirty lovin's what you need
You can get it from me Baby
(Solo)
I know what you want
Baby what your body needs
Baby give it up
Baby give it up to me
Breakin' down ya door
Beggin' for more, dirty lovin'
This ain't no trick or treat
Baby suck it and see
Dirty lovin', dirty lovin'
Don't want nothin' obscene
If you know what I mean
Dirty lovin' dirty lovin'

There's a girl on the roof
Like a bird on a wire
It's a moment of truth
In a lifetime of liars
There's a voie in her head
Friving her crazy
She moves close to the edge
And says no one can save me
Then she sees him
His cigarette glows in the dark
Chrous:
Tell me your secrets
I'll tell you mine
Your heart's been broken
So many times
Tell me your secrets
Confess your crime
Who yu deceivin'
Don't leave it sleeping
Tell me our secrets
There's a crowd in the street
And some freak with a video
Every heart skips a beat
And it looks like she's letting go
But a hand reaches out
And catches her tightly...
And he saves her
He wipes tears from her eyes
(Chorus)
He gets up and walks away
He never looks back
Just fades away
She's safe now
Tell me your secrets...

Unbutton your dress
Unbuckle my jeans
Tear off the clothesof convention
Step into the dream
Got a hard on me
Got a hard on you
Seems the natural thing to do
Call out my name
Whisper you love me
Put your sweet body over mine
And heavens above me
Goin´ down on me
Goin´ down on you
Seems like the natural thing to do
We could be dancin´ tonight
Beneath the stars and the pale moonlight
Dancin´ tonight, pretty darlin´ hold me tight
Dancin´ tonight, everything´s gonna be airtight
Shaa na na, hey now
They gave em´ a flag
They gave em´ a gun
They were the curse of the new generation
They were daughters and sons
But when the bullets flew
They bled red, white and blue
Seemed Like the natural thing to do
This is no game
Standing in the dark
I swear I heard you calling my name
And I knew things had changed
No pain no gain
Something in your eyes just told me
That this nightmare would end
And I thought I had found a friend
Shout it from the highest steeple
Let it out to all the people
Play it on the loudest speaker
Burnin' like the highest fever
You hit the right spot
Chorus:
No more lonely nights
With a restless heart
Roll the dice
Make a brand new start
When the world you knew got shattered
You and me were all that mattered
Just one way I'm gonna lose this restless heart
Running away with you
Human again
I take you in my arms
And hold you 'till the fear is all gone
And now the race is won
Shout it from the highest steeple
Let it out to all the people
Play it on the loudest speaker
Burnin' like the highest fever
You hit the right spot
(Chorus)
There's a new horizon
That we're both heading to
It's out there in the distance
And it's playin' our tune
Runnin' away
Running away with you
Think you got a make on me
Sussed me out based on what you see
Hey baby I got news for you
I'm a right hand man with a left hand screw
And nobody, nobody, nobody gives a damn
One last chance is all I need
A girl like you gonna set me free
I'm a lost cause emotionally
Lost my heart at wounded knee
And nobody, nobody, nobody understands
Yeah nobody, nobody, nobody gives a damn
And the world keeps turnin'
And the lies keep hurtin'
And the fire keeps on burnin'
And we're just feedin' the flames
I learned my lesson
Learned it well
She burned me up and it hurt like hell
The more I learn the less I know
Her eyes said yes but her mouth said no
And nobody, nobody, nobody understands
Yeah nobody, nobody, nobody gives a damn
Chorus
And nobody knows, nobody cares
Walk a mile in the shoes
The devil in you is runnin scared
And the world's gone crazy
And there's nothin' can save me
And it's simply amazin'
Ain't one damn thing gonna change
And the world keeps on turnin'
I put my hand on your stocking
I was movin' nice and slow
Let my fingers do the walking
And there ain't far to go
Don't tell me "I don't wanna be a girl like that"
Do you wanna see a grown man cry?
You don't wanna be a girl like that
But this could be the first time
This could be the first time
Naughty naughty
Loud and bawdy
TTTT tease me
Take it easy hug and squeeze
A naughty naughty guy
Bedroom eyes, they undress me
Take me, cut me to the bone
Lace and satin pressed against me
Should we call a chaperone
Don't tell me "I don't wanna be a girl like that"
Do you wanna see a grown man cry
You don't wanna be a girl like that
But this could be the first time
This could be the first time
Naughty naughty
Cute and horny
TTTT tease me
Take it easy
Hug and squeeze me, love outta line
With your hair hung down
And your dress ridin' high
And your eyes burning hot like the sun
Kiss me hard, squeeze me tight
Gonna love you all night
Cause I'm a naughty, naughty, naughty guy
(Flight Of The Spruce Goose)
He was a coalminer,
working down in Pittsburg P.A.
She was his bride,
but he held her in his arms for just a day
Everybody told him he was crazy,
but he knew better
Couldn't get that girl out of his head,
he was gonna get her
Loaded up the truck, and stole her away
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away
I'm gonna steal ya, gonna cut a road to L.A.
A thousand miles to go,
and a thousand more behind,
they were on the run
Love can make you blind,
so you never realize just what you're running from
Everybody told 'em they were crazy,
but they knew better
Sure as there's a sun up in the sky,
they were gonna get there
Put their trust in luck to show them the way,
yeah yeah
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away, gonna get you today
I'm gonna steal ya, gonna cut a road to L.A.
(Solo)
Just like that silver bird, we were never meant to fly
Forget about them, put your trust in me
You're gonna see your name up in lights
I'm gonna steal ya,
I'm gonna steal you away, gonna get you today
I'm gonna steal ya,
gonna cut a road to L.A., hey yeah
I'm gonna steal ya,
I'm gonna steal you away, gonna get you today
I'm gonna steal ya,
I'm gonna steal you away, steal you away
I'm gonna steal ya,
gonna steal you away, yeah
Steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away, yeah
I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away, gonna get you today
I'm gonna steal ya, gonna cut a road to L.A., yeah yeah
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away, yeah yeah
I'm gonna steal ya, I'm gonna steal you away... (to fade)
Parr
Caught that look in your eye
He's back again
Told me time after time
He's just a friend
I need to know
I can't go on
I won't survive without you
You said you'd laid that ghost to rest
Why don't you confess
Chorus:
It's startin' all over again
If this is the start
Baby, where will it end
You broke it in two
And this heart just won't mend
And it's startin' all over again
Startin' all over
I just gotta find out
Is it better with him
I've been livin' without
Now he's movin' in
I need to know
I can't go on
I won't survive without you
Why d'ya have to hurt so much
I can feel it when we touch
(chorus)
I get down on my knees and pray
You'll be comin' back some day
Oh I can feel it
It's startin' all over again...
My pulse is racin'
I'm drivin' too fast
One hand on the wheel
The other one on your ...
Miles are unfolding
I love what yo'ur holding
Don't know if I can hold out
With ya chewin' my ear
Chrous:
Makin' love in a layby
Can't wait to get home
You're drivin' me crazy
Just want your love
Dashboard is glowing
Your love is smoulderin'
Don't stop what ya doin' baby
You know what I mean
I'm feelin' on a roll
Don't need no cruise control
Automatic selection
Just need your speed
(Chorus)
Hey pretty baby
You're drivin' me wild
Curled up in my front seat
You're a heavenly child
In the searchlights
You could see us as we circled around
Down below us
You were screaming I could hear the sound
I could see your arms
Reaching up to me
Like a demon
Feel the madness running through the crowd
We were freedom
From the moment that we hit the ground
And the wild man
Laid the thunder down
Do you remember me
Like I remember you
In a sea of hands
You came shining through
Through the mist of time
I can see it now
Chorus:
All my lfe I will remember this
(Under a raging moon)
For this moment I was born for it
(Under a ragin moon)
Under a raging moon
We saw Zion there
(Under a raging moon)
We we're flyin' there
It ended all too soon
Under a raging moon
We were out there
When they handed us the rebel's crown
All the headlines
All they want to do is tear us down
But the wildman
He didn't fool around
Do you remember me
Cus' I remember you
Yeah you won my love
When the dream came true
When my blood ran high
I can hear it now
(Chorus)
Taking me back to better times
We never read the danger signs
Why are the young
Why are the young so blind
Growin' up
You don't see the writin' on the wall
Passin' by
Movin' straight ahead you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain
You'll find you're all alone
Everything has changed
Play the game
You know you can't quit until it's won
Soldier on
Only you can do what must be done
You know in some way, You're a lot like me
You're just a prisoner, And you're tryin' to break free
I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flyin'
Higher and higher
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
St. Elmo's Fire
Burnin' up
Don't know just how far that I can go
Soon be home
Only just a few miles down the road
I can make it, I know I can
You broke the boy in me
But you won't break the man
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin' in me
Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
And I'm comin' alive
I can hear the music playing
I can see the banners fly
Feel like a man again
I'll hold my head high
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
St. Elmo's Fire
I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flyin' higher and higher
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is this pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin'
Burnin' in me
I can feel it burnin'.

This little house
This little voice
This little town
Of Little Choice
I remember a dream
Bigger than me
My friends all laughed
My mother cried
But I would not be denied
I was going to be
All that I could be
Is this the same sky we're under
Is this the same sun
Are these the same dreams we're dreamin'
Or am I the only one
Dream on...
I left school and got a job
They tried to make me
What I'm not
Punchin' time at the old factory
In my time of desperation
I was dreamin' of you
Does your heart lie in a fortress
Can these words of mine break through
Dream On...
Dreams come true in Calafornia
Gonna write my name in stone
Fancy names in old disguises
Bled me to the bone
Left me hangin' by the phone
Ten thousand miles from home
And in the end
One truth remains
Through the passions and the pain
Oh the fire's still burnin' in me
I climbed the highest mountain
Crossed the wildest sea
I knew this old town was
dependin' on me
Dream on...
You're lookin' sharp
You're lookin' good
You've come so far
And I just thought you'd like to know
How proud of you we are
Father to son
You're my number one
Chorus:
The Best, the best a man can get
The Best, the best a man can get
As a tree is trained
So it will grow
Honest and true
We gave you all we had to give
The rest was up to you
Now the race is won
You're the champion
(Chorus)
When all my memories fade away
I'll remember you this way
So don't you ever change
Best, the best a man can get
I put my hand on your stocking
I was movin' nice and slow
Let my fingers do the walking
And there ain't far to go
Don't tell me "I don't wanna be a girl like that"

Gonna love you all night
Cause I'm a naughty, naughty, naughty guy
Don't know how love survives
When all I can do is to barely stay alive
Wish I could go back in time
To a bedsit paradise
She sat down next to me
Dunked her biscuit in my tea
You don't need sugar
You're sweet enough for me
Told me she was movin' in
We'd be sharin' evrything
Baby you and I in a besit paradise
Days of summer wine
We were laughing all the time
Partners in crime
I could love her without even tryin'
Baby you and I
In a bedsit paradise
Only had a single bed
Got as close as two can get
Makin' love while Lennon sang Imagine
Stuck your posters on my wall
Che Guevara, John and Paul
They were lookin' down on nights of passion
Days of summer wine
Makin' love most of the time
Partners in crime
I could love her without even tryin'
Baby you and I in a bedsit paradise
Time goes by
While we're dreamin' of tomorrow
Turnin' tides while the love just ebbs away
A faded photograph or two
With pain all over you
Days of summer wine
We we're laughin' all the time
Won't you take me back in time
To a bedsit paradise
Thought those days would never end
You were my best friend
Partners in crime
I could love you without even tryin'
Days of summer wine
We were laughin' all the time
Now I'm just a lonely guy
In a bedsit paradise
You know I wouldn't lie to you
Oh girl you'd better believe me
I'd never say goodby to you
As long as you need me
Trust me
Baby you're the only one
Trust me
Don't make me the lonely one
I'm happy when I'm near to you
Yeah it's true can't get any better
If someone else would ever try for me
You would see I wouldn't let her
Trust me
Baby you're the only one
Trust me
Don't make me the lonely one
Chorus:
Somethin' happened baby in my life
The minute I saw you
All the others faded from my life
The minute I saw you
Hold me, hold me
All I want to do is kiss your baby face
Hold me, hold me
Gonna rock you in my arms 'til I know your safe
'Bin waiting all my life for you
Yeah it's true youu better believe me
There ain't nothin' I would hide from you
Cross my heart you're all that I needed
(Chorus)
Somethin' happened baby in my life
The minute I saw you
Headin' down this iron road
These six strings on my back
Must be twenty years or more
Since this train roared down the track
Sometimes I hear the whistle blowin'
Conductor shoutin' all aboard
But I'm rustin' in the stockyard
Said that's all I was good for
I dream I'm heading down this iron road
I dream I'm heading back
I'm building up a head of steam
And I'm burnin' up the track
I see her wavin' from her window
I'm smiling... waivin' back
I don't feel so alone
I'm comin' home
Andit feels like the first time
Im comin' home
Comin' home for the last time
Stokin' up the embers
I can see the fire rise
Every flame burnin'
Lightin' memories in her eyes
All im asking from you is a second chance
I'm comin' home
And it feels like the first time
I'm comin' home
See the world in a new light
I'm comin' home
See The world in a new light
I'm comin home
There comes a time
In every young boy's life
When he takes in his hand for the first time
And holds it like a wife
Up there in his bedroom
Full of dreams and fantasies
I guess a boy can't help himself
Doin' what comes naturally
Practice every day
That's what my Dad would say
You gotta practice boy
If you go what it takes
You know practice makes
Just practice boy
Teasin' it squeezin' it
For all it was worth
Strummin' it lovin' it
I gotta be first
Practice every day
That's what my Dad would say
You gotta practice boy
If you got what it takes
You know what practice makes
P-e-r-f-e-c-t
He's good enough for me
Other kids were duckin' school
Playin' football playin' the fool
I was up there in my bedroom
Bangin' out those twelve bar blues
(Chorus)
P-e-r-f-e-c-t
He's good enough for me
Today at the Cathedral
They read out their names
Just like they've done
For a thousand years
And a thousand years before
I'm not William Wallace
I'm not Robert the Bruce
I am just an English boy
Embarrassed by the truth
Today at the Cathedral
They read out their names
And a bitter wind blew through me
Some things never change
They took away their country
Laid the clans to waste
And left a land of heroes
Turnin' in their graves
Today at the Cathedral
They read out their names
Sarah, John, Richard and Paul
God bless them all
God bless William Wallace
God bless Robert the Bruce
God bless the voice of freedom
God bless the voice of truth
Today at the Cathedral
They read out their names
Just like they've done for a thousand years
And a thousand years before
God bless them all
God bless them all
Growin' up
You don't see the writin' on the wall

Take me where my future's lying
St. Elmo's Fire
Burnin' up
Don't know just how far that I can go
Soon be home
Only just a few miles down the road
I can make it, I know I can
You broke the boy in me
But you won't break the man
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin' in me
Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
And I'm comin' alive
I can hear the music playing
I can see the banners fly
Feel like a man again
I'll hold my head high
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lying
St. Elmo's Fire
I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flyin' higher and higher
Gonna be a man in motion
All I need is this pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire
I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin'
Burnin' in me
I can feel it burnin'
How ya doin' America
Guess its been a while
Bin' holdin' out for a miracle
Missed me by a mile
Is this the same sky were under
Is this the same sun
Are these the same dreams we're dreamin'
Or am I the only one
Dream on, dream on
How ya doin' America
Droppin' you a line
A smile and a memory
To an old friend of mine
In your time of desperation
I was prayin' for you
Does your heart lie in a fortress
Can these words of mine break through
Dream on...
Burnin' up the highway,
Chasin' shadows in the night
He was on the road to freedom
Passin' everything in sight
In the middle of the fast lane
On the wrong side of the road
Slipped her into fifth
And goodbye was all she wrote
Ghost driver, ghost driver
In the night
Never saw the warning
Of the danger up ahead
He was headin' fast to nowhere
With the needle in the red
Saw a blue light in the rear-view
Sayin' stop, but he said no
Then he saw a strange reflection
Of a man he used to know
Ghost driver, ghost driver
In the night
Heaven is a highway
With the Devil at the wheel
Three hundred crazy horses
In black designer steel
The neon sign said fifty
Not a hundred and fifty five
But it really didn't matter
He was learnin' how to drive
Ghost driver, ghost driver
In the night
